Description
A device is developed to provide fast and reliable measurement of stress and
strains in parts of machines, apparatus and installations. Basic components
of the device are miniature air-cooled X-ray tubes (5 watt capacity), detector,
goniometer and electronic block.
A part to be investigated is radiated with primary X-ray beam, secondary reflected
beam is registered with use of detector and electronic block. On the base of
registered data stress/ strain characteristics are calculated and compared with
critical values (e.g. yield strength). Due to use of special software obtained
information can be applied for prediction of operative life of the part has
been tested.
Benefits
Low radiation.
Due to low tube capacity (from 2.4 to 5.0 W) the radiation level at the
distance of 12 cm (4.0 inches) from a place being exposed to X-ray beam doesnt
exceed natural background level. In accordance with measurements the exposition
capacity at the distance of 100 mm from tube window is in a range from 11 to
40 R/min. So there is no need to use special protective shield against X-ray
radiation. The use of diffractometer is harmless for human beings and nature.
Portability
The diffractometer has dimensions which are comparable with ones of modern PC
dimensions. Total weight of the device is about 20 kg (44 pounds). Low weight
of the diffractometer provides the use of it directly in working site (e.g.
pipeline diagnostics in field condition). Specially for using in field conditions
the diffractometer can be supplied with small 350 W power electric generator
driven by internal combustion engine.
High operating rate.
An exposition time varies in range of 0,5 - 15 min depending upon the material
of object to be tested and presence or absence of monochromators. It took only
20 - 40 min (depending upon working conditions, object to be tested etc.) to
prepare the diffractometer for carrying out measurements. Short exposition time
and fast data processing provide carrying out real-time diagnostics.
Simplicity of exploitation.
The diffractometer may be handled only one person. Diffractometer control panel
has three buttons and four indicators. Due to application of special software
for performing stress and strain express analysis both omega and square psi
sine methods can be used. By customers request the device may be supplied
with any fastening unit (for example tripod, magnet or vacuum unit).
Data reliability
Numerous stress/strain studies of high-pressure vessels, welded joint, parts
of aircraft, turbine blades and so on have proved reliability and precession
of data obtained by the use of the diffractometer. ..
Project development
More than 10 diffractometers have been built and operated.
Legal protection of technologies
Russian and Eurasian Patents.
Application, commercial use
Turbine.
The diffractometer was successfully used for measuring stresses in turbine and
compressor blades, wheel rims, blades locks and so on. Such measurements are
necessary to provide safety of turbine exploitation and aircraft safety.
High pressure vessels and pipe lines.
The diffractometer can be used for stress analysis of pipe lines in field conditions
and pressurized vessels and tanks.
Railways and bridges.
The diffractometer can be used to check safety of railroad rails and stressed
components of railroad and highway bridges.
