Alloy with High Damping and Mechanical Properties.

Description

The alloy is intended to manufacture casings of various devices and mechanisms causing raised noise and vibration at their operation. Besides iron, carbon, and aluminum the alloy contains manganese and titanium. This alloy is melted out by fusing pure charge materials in open induction furnaces. Metal conversion to a cold-rolled sheet occurs according to the following procedure: hammering, hot rolling, heat treatment, etching, cold rolling, and heat treatment with endurance at high temperature with the subsequent slow cooling.

Benefits

The alloy has high damping properties due to the certain manganese content, and high mechanical properties due to the titanium one. The alloy is cheap, because it does not require an application of new and complex metallurgical processes. It can be manufactured by means of open melting in the air atmosphere whereas the known alloys with high damping properties do require the vacuum metallurgy approaches for their manufacturing. The alloy is rather cheap due to the low price of its components, as it contains Fe (88-96%), Al (4-12%) and a few non-scarce alloying additives.

Project development

The alloy was made and tested under industrial conditions. The inventors have a complete set of experimental data concerning properties of the offered alloy.

The alloy is covered by the Russian patents.

Application, commercial use

The alloy can be applied at producing hulls of ships, casings of metal-cutting and woodworking equipment and tools (for example, disk saws), and crushing equipment.
