Technologies TESTING AND MEASURING
Project #127
Portable eddy current flaw detector probe with computerized measurer of crack depth.

Description

The device is intended to reveal the continuity defects (cracks, inclusions, etc.) and corrosion cavities in parts made of magnetic and nonmagnetic steels, nonferrous metal, refractory metals and alloys, as well as in weld seams and under various coatings with thickness up to 8-10 mm.

Signal inherent in the continuity defects are recognized by the following peculiarities:

  • sensing elements of the eddy current transducer (ECT) are selectively tuned to the continuity defects;
  • amplitude-phase analysis of recorded signal allows to distinguish signals from surface and subsurface defects, and to suppress the influence of surface roughness or curvature.

The flaw detector is supplied by two batteries of the "Energizer" or "Duracell" kind (9 V voltage). Temperature range of its operation is -5...+50 °C. Maximum overall dimensions are:
eddy current transducer: 35x35x15 mm;
electronic block: 180x130x55 mm.
Maximum masses are:
ECT: 100 grams;
electronic block: 1000 grams.
Mean lifetime is 10 years.

Benefits

The device has the following advantages:

  • possibility to test objects that were inaccessible before for the electromagnetic (eddy current) testing, for example, welded joints;
  • long lifetime;
  • possibility to reveal both small surface and rough subsurface defects;
  • the ECT end is protected by the abrasion-resistant shield from the abrasive action and can reveal small surface and rough subsurface defects under the nonmagnetic material layer up to 7 mm thick, and surface defects under the dye (rust, sealant) up to 10 mm thick.
